Email Correspondence via Otherworldly Avatars (2024)

Created in 2024 as part of Nurturing Nodes in the Nook of an Odd Sock (International Exhibition and Global Networking Project), which artist-curator Yutaka Inagawa both curated and conceptualised, this work is based on actual email exchanges between Inagawa and participating artist Taro Izumi up to a certain point. Using ChatGPT to generate AI avatars that imitate the two correspondents’ writing styles, interests, and philosophical inclinations, the project produces a series of imaginary exchanges. After having the AI create various email patterns, Inagawa fragmented them into paragraphs (and where necessary, individual lines) and reassembled them multiple times, ultimately forming an original email thread with a parallel-world atmosphere. It is structured into pages 1 to 9, with page 8 intentionally left missing.
About Page 8 Going Missing
The posters for this project were made in both Japanese and English. In their real email exchanges, Inagawa and Izumi both had a tendency to avoid grandiose or overblown expressions, finding them slightly embarrassing and deliberately opting for oblique phrasing to convey their thoughts. However, the AI was unable to capture this nuance and, on the contrary, emphasised those grand or pompous elements in its attempt to replicate their writing. The work was created in early 2024, and the AI available at that time was not yet capable of reflecting the complex philosophical tones and personal traits found in the original emails. Consequently, the generated text accentuated precisely what they had been consciously avoiding, resulting in a noticeable dissonance.
While retaining these discordant elements, Inagawa dismantled and reassembled the text in Japanese (since the original email correspondences were written in Japanese) to create a new structure infused with a multiplicity of moods and underlying complexities beyond a single perspective. Pages 1 to 7 and 9 were eventually translated into English by AI after much trial and error, but the AI deemed page 8 “untranslatable” and refused to complete the task. No translation was ever produced for that page.
To incorporate the AI’s decision that it was “untranslatable” into the work itself, page 8 was intentionally omitted. By deliberately inserting this “non-existent” state, the project highlights and preserves the slippages and discrepancies that arose in dialogue with the AI, lending a sense of reality to the flow of the text.
彼岸アバターによるメール往復書簡
この作品は、2024年にアーティスト・キュレーターである稲川豊が構想・キュレーションを行った「奇数ソックスとノード / Nurturing Nodes in the Nook of an Odd Sock（国際展・グローバルネットワーキングプロジェクト）」の一環として制作された。稲川豊と参加アーティスト泉太郎の、ある時点までの実際のメールのやり取りをもとに、ChatGPTを活用し、両者の文章スタイルや趣向、哲学的傾向を模倣したAIアバターを生成し、架空のメール往復書簡を創出する試みである。稲川はAIに対し、複数のメールやりとりパターンを生成させた後、それらを段落単位や最小レベルの行単位まで断片化し、再構築と組み合わせを繰り返すことで、パラレルな世界観を持つ独自のメールスレッドを形成した。本書は1〜9ページで構成されているが、8ページは意図的に欠番とされている。
8ページについて
本プロジェクト用に制作されたポスターは、日本語と英語のバイリンガル仕様である。稲川と泉の実際のメールのやりとりでは、荘厳・仰々しい表現を避ける傾向があり、恥ずかしさを感じてあえて遠回しな言い回しを選んでいた。しかし本作の制作時期である2024年当時、AIはまだ複雑な哲学的ニュアンスや個人的性格を十分に反映できる段階にはなく、むしろ荘厳さや仰々しさを強調して再現しようとする結果となった。これにより二人が避けようとしていた要素が強調され、違和感を伴うテキストが生まれてしまったのである。
それでもなお、そうした違和感を残しつつ、稲川は日本語のテキストを断片化・再構築することで、単一の視点に留まらない複数の情緒や含意を内包した新たな構造を組み上げた。1〜7ページおよび9ページは試行錯誤の末にAIによる英訳も行われたが、8ページについてはAIが「翻訳不可能」と判断しタスクを放棄したまま、最終的に訳文が生成されることはなかった。
この「翻訳不可能」というAIの判断を作品構造へ組み込むため、8ページはあえて欠番とされた。あえて「存在しない」状態を挿入することで、AIとの対話によって生じた意味のズレや齟齬を可視化し、テキストの流れにリアリティをもたらしている。
